The U-boat or underwater boat (submarine) was Hitlers main naval weapon against allied forces and American convoys that tried to carry supplies to the British. Hitler would send out his U-boats to go out and patrol the area around Britain. Any unidentified or unrecognised ship was to be destroyed. However, this resulted in the destruction of passenger ships that had to change course to go around a storm. The Lusitania appeared to the Germans as an enemy ship because of its course change. The ship was shit by a torpedo and sank in less then ten minutes, killing many on board. The U-boats overall were able to destroy countless ships without even losing one of its own, making it have a very strong impact on the war.
